What is the FurCon Dance Competition?

The FurCon Dance Competition is an exciting display of dancing skill. Dancers of all types — from our own community — will engage in battle for your adoration, their glory, and our fantastic prizes! You won’t want to miss it!

When and Where

Prelims

  • Tryouts: Tentatively Friday, January 16th (Room and Time TBD)
  • Onsite signups may be accepted, but there is no guarantee.

Finals

  • Date & Time: Saturday, January 17th (Time TBD), Main Stage in the Convention Center
  • Please arrive no later than 30 minutes before show time
  • Please make sure convention badges are present upon arrival
  • Please do not harass other dancers if they look like they are concentrating — it’s throwing their concentration off and they may be focusing for the show!
  • If any emergency arises, please notify the FCDC staff

Rules

When performing, we ask you not do two things, or you may be disqualified:

  • Jump from the stage
  • Remove fursuit attire in the middle of a routine

Fursuit Requirements

Dancers must be in fursuit for at-con tryout and finals. Partials are okay. At minimum: Head, hands, feet paws and tails are required (Costumed shoe/footwear i.e. “Happy Feet” are acceptable) with no skin showing.

Note: Each case where a character has no tail or an overly complicated tail to dance with will be looked at individually.

Music

  • Solo competitors: Upload mixes between 1:30 and 2 minutes long by uploading a file to Google Drive
  • Group entrants: May add 30 seconds to their mix per additional competitor (i.e. a 3 person group can have a 3 minute mix)

Music Guidelines

Songs must follow the PG-13 rating to be played on stage. (If unsure, please submit your mix ahead of time for screening). Specifically:

  • No excessive swearing (no more than 4 swear words)
  • No racial slurs or overly graphic sexual references

If you desire assistance with your mix, feel free to contact the event organizer:

Judging

Between the prelims and finals, judges will be completely different. In both the prelims and the finals, judges will be looking at factors such as:

  • Execution and cleanliness
  • Diversity of movements
  • Complexity of the performance
  • Levels (use of the Y axis)
  • Traveling, or employing footwork to move around
  • Musicality; how well movement fits the music
  • Tempo; do they change up their speed and play with different song elements?
  • Synchronization (only applies to groups)

Prelims

In the prelims, competitors will perform one (solo or group) at a time for the judges. The judges will be asked to assign one of 5 phrases to describe your routine:

  • Great Performance (5 out of 5)
  • Good Performance (4 out of 5)
  • Maybe (3 out of 5)
  • Needs Work (2 out of 5)
  • Not Ready for Stage (1 out of 5)

In the end, scores will be added up, and the qualifying finalists will be announced via e-mail, and Further Confusion’s official Twitter, as well as a Telegram group that competitors will have the option to join.

All prelim routines will be recorded for judge deliberation, and can be requested by competitors for their own review.

Finals

In finals, judges will utilize the ballroom system, which asks them to rank the competitors in real time. Basically, whoever goes first will default to first place, and if a judge likes the second competitor more, they will bump the first entrant to second place. This continues on until all finalists are ranked. Finalists will only ever stay the same rank or move down one between rounds; they will never go up.

REMEMBER TO HAVE A FUN AND HEALTHY COMPETITION!!!
